Series: eResourcing – handling data sustainability

Digitalization can make a significant contribution to sustainability. The raw materials of digitalization are data. The resource-conserving use of data is essential for the digitalization of tomorrow.

Until now, it has been impossible to systematically record product data from the raw material stage through to recycling: the value chain is too complex for this and the data flow is not continuous enough. However, this leaves significant untapped potential for optimizing production. As Fraunhofer’s DMD4Future project is now showing, eResourcing can provide solutions that address this by collecting and connecting data at different points in the process chain. What makes this remarkable is that the data can be used to optimize many different stages of the value chain.

Comprehensive analysis of trip and route data can significantly reduce the energy consumption of subway trains, according to a collaborative project between VAG Verkehrs-Aktiengesellschaft Nürnberg, Fraunhofer IIS, and Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU). In this interview, Dr. Andreas Bärmann, mathematical optimization expert at Fraunhofer IIS, and Frederik Nöth, technology and innovation advisor at VAG, explain how eResourcing can help optimize the energy consumption of subway systems by using the available data to create mathematical models.

Analyzing plants with a CT scanner may seem like a curious idea, but the Fraunhofer Development Center X-ray Technology EZRT, a research division of the Fraunhofer-Institute for Integrated Circuits IIS and Dutch company PhenoKey were confident it could work. Now, their joint development project has produced a robust CT scanner specifically designed for use in plant breeding. We talked to department head Dr. Stefan Gerth of the Fraunhofer Development Center X-ray Technology EZRT and PhenoKey managing director Bas van Eerdt to find out how CT data can make life easier for breeders – and why e-resourcing is such an important part of the puzzle.

We must start putting greater emphasis on treating data as a valuable resource. After all, producing and storing data consumes enormous amounts of energy. One solution is the concept of eResourcing, which provides for a sustainable way to handle the resource “data.”  Even data recycling will soon be a matter of course. Prof. Alexander Martin explains why.
