Clinical Study DiGaitAppPD

Better care for Parkinson's patients with the help of a digital health application

DPM.research in use for patients with Parkinson's disease

Goal

The project DiGaitAppPD prepares and scientifically evaluates a prototype of a "digital health application (DiGA)", which directly addresses the application focus "home monitoring and therapy support in chronic diseases". For this purpose, sensor-based gait parameters, patient-reported outcomes, information from medical treatment, and telemedical care were recorded in a clinical study with 60 Parkinson's patients. All study data from the clinical trials will be entered via the Fraunhofer IIS study management system DPM Research.

Motivation

Parkinson's disease is the most common neurodegenerative, age-associated movement disorder, affecting about 7 million patients worldwide (about 400,000 patients in Germany). The progressive movement disorders increasingly limit daily activities and quality of life. Studies show that an optimal, symptomatic drug treatment in combination with an interdisciplinary care concept can increase the health status of the patients, as well as prevent complications and reduce costs.

A multimodal therapy concept with frequent therapy adjustments is necessary for optimal treatment of the slowly progressive movement restrictions of Parkinson's syndrome. This is currently being implemented by the specialist during outpatient consultations in the practice and at the special center.

The telemedical, digitally supported, continuous therapy monitoring concept DiGaitAppPD, which can be used on the patient's mobile device, therefore aims to optimize this process and provide the best possible support for patient satisfaction and health as well as the care processes in conjunction with the doctor and therapist.
