Non-Terrestrial Networks NTN

Hyperconnectivity: Simulation platform for 3D networks

System-level simulations (SLS) are an important component in estimating the performance of communication networks in scenarios with many participants. With the help of the SLS developed at Fraunhofer IIS, various scenarios can be examined in detail for hybrid scenarios with satellites and terrestrial 5G/6G networks as well as for direct vehicle communication via sidelink and corresponding evaluations can be carried out. A web interface is available for setting up the simulation and evaluating the results. For example, KPIs such as coverage, data rates and throughput, handover are evaluated.

Extended coverage through NTN: OAI-based emulation

Future Non-Terrestrial Networks (NTN) include both satellites and high altitude platforms (HAPS) to provide connectivity for terrestrial (e.g. vehicles, smartphones) and non-terrestrial users (e.g. drones) with the mobile 5G standard. The OAI (Open Air Interface) prototyping platform of Fraunhofer IIS is able to demonstrate hybrid scenarios, such as extended coverage and coexistence of TN/NTN networks. With the help of the OAI prototyping platform, conclusions can be drawn about the performance of 5G over satellite links. This enables satellite operators, mobile network operators and manufacturers to test the 3GPP standard in different environments and under different realistic conditions.

6G-SKY – 6G for Connected Sky

The 6G-SKY project is developing solutions for the next generation of mobile communications that ensure reliable and robust networking on the ground and in the air. 6G-SKY is funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Protection as part of the European research initiative CELTIC-NEXT.

Fraunhofer IIS is leading the German consortium, further developing system-level simulations for hybrid 6G scenarios with terrestrial and NTN in the project and is involved in technology demonstrations for 6G radio links via satellites, from high-flying platforms (HAPS) and for terrestrial 6G connections (www.6g-sky.net).
