Galileo for European Union Defence (GEODE)

Galileo is the world's first satellite navigation system (GNSS) under civilian control and offers encrypted satellite signals, the so-called Galileo Public Regulated Service (PRS). The Galileo PRS signals are specially protected and cannot be interfered with or manipulated. Galileo PRS can be made available to authorities and organisations with security tasks, operators of critical infrastructures and authorised users.

General conditions for the use of Galileo PRS

The GEODE (GalileEO for EU DEfence) project aims to create the framework conditions for the use of Galileo PRS in the military sector. In addition to a specification and standardisation phase, further security modules, receivers and antennas are to be developed and tested in specially created test environments.

Project goals

  • Design, prototyping, testing and qualification of:
    • 7 Galileo PRS security modules (3 Application-specific Integrated Circuits [ASIC], 4 Field Programmable Gate Arrays [FPGA])
    • 4 GPS / Galileo PRS compatible Anti-Jamming Controlled Reception Pattern Antennas (CRPA) for the application areas Land, Maritime, Time & Synchro and Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems (RPAS)
    • 9 Galileo PRS receivers incl. 2 server-based variants for the application areas Land, Maritime, Time & Synchro, RPAS and Space Segment
  • Design of a Galileo PRS server-based solution for the space segment
  • Prototyping of a common and standardised test environment (European PNT [Position Navigation Time] Qalification Facility - EPQF)
  • Design of a Galileo PRS service management infrastructure

Contribution Fraunhofer IIS

  • European standardisation of navigation solutions for Galileo PRS
  • Development and test of a Galileo PRS application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC)
  • Development and test of a Galileo PRS application module for time and synchronisation applications
  • Support in the design of a Controlled Reception Pattern Antenna (CRPA) for time and synchronisation applications
  • Development and demonstration of server-based Galileo PRS technologies on a Remotely Piloted Aircraft System (RPAS)
  • Accompanying development of a Galileo PRS infrastructure for operational tests of the developed receivers
