This year’s NAB is about creating experiences and bringing them to people. So, quite naturally, we’ll be showcasing our contributions to capturing audiences all over the world in Las Vegas from April 14-17. Together with our partner institutes Fraunhofer FOKUS and Fraunhofer HHI we are showcasing research and technologies for the broadcast industry.
From Fraunhofer IIS, we are bringing technologies that shape the globally deployed standards and technologies in the fields of audio and moving picture production. As the creator of mp3 and co-creator of the Digital Cinema Initiative test plan we have been driving the development in both industry sectors for more than 30 years. Today, almost all computers, mobile phones and consumer electronic devices are equipped with technologies from Erlangen and are used by billions of people around the world every day. At NAB 2024, we will showcase the most advanced audio codecs of the industry as well as professional tools for digital film and media production.
From stereo to multichannel to immersive 3D audio, MPEG-H Audio has the features you need to enhance viewer loyalty and advertising revenue. Already on the air in Brazil and South Korea, the Fraunhofer technology also powers Sony’s 360 Reality Audio music streaming which available on major platforms.
MPEG-H Audio uniquely enables you to deliver personalized audio complete with custom UI on the device. For example, your live sports viewers can pick their favorite commentary or listen in their native language without needing to restart the stream. Accessibility customers can enhance the dialog placement or tune into audio description while the rest of the family enjoys the regular mix. Replacement ads can be synchronized down to the video frame level, both on the intro and outro, without garbling the playback, keeping fans right with the action.
xHE-AAC, the latest generation of the AAC codec family, is the ideal solution for today’s audio and video streaming services – be it movies, music, audiobooks, podcasts or digital radio. With DASH/HLS streaming from 12 to more than 320 kbit/s for stereo, as well as improved speech quality and stereo imaging, mandatory loudness and dynamic range control, xHE-AAC noticeably improves sound quality. Its mandatory MPEG-D DRC loudness and dynamic range control and seamless bitrate adjustment using DASH and HLS guarantees the best user experience in any playback situation. xHE-AAC decoding is natively supported in Android, Fire OS, iOS, and Windows.
Post-pro Cloud is a localization service which neatly integrates into your Digital Cinema Package (DCP) creation workflow. LLM- and AI-based technologies that facilitate localization efforts are on the rise. The Post-pro Cloud framework lets you pick and choose the transcription and translation services that suit you best from a selection of such tools. A cloud-based editor facilitates the streamlined cooperation of your subtitling and editing team.
Fraunhofer IIS offers a JPEG XS SDK to take your workflow solution to the next level. The JPEG XS ISO standard was developed for the high-resolution video transfer over Internet Protocol of typical video formats in RGB, YCbCr color space, and CFA Bayer. And it is optimized not only for natural content, but also for screen and mixed video content. Because of its special low-complexity design it fits in almost any FPGA or ASIC hardware, CPU, GPU, and graphic platform like Nvidia Jetson or ARM processors to guarantee the robust transfer of high-resolution video data. The Fraunhofer JPEG XS SDK provides robustness with its additional forward error correction and concealment. A predictive and precise rate control supports RTP streaming (RFC 9134) for ST2110-22, and the MXF container format can store single-track and multi-track essence (ST2124). A compression ratio of 2:1 up to 16:1 is possible along with the requirements of the application. The Fraunhofer JPEG XS SDK offers a free Application Support Package to guide and assist system integrators and developers with the fast and convenient implementation of JPEG XS applications into professional workflows and devices.
Fraunhofer FOKUS is driving research in digital transformation, including communication systems and Internet-delivered video. At NAB, the institute presents its latest innovation in advanced streaming technologies more.
Fraunhofer HHI is a world leader in the development of mobile and optical communication networks and systems as well as the processing and coding of video signals. The video coding experts will show how to efficiently compress film grain with their encoder implementation of the most recent VVC standard more.
